Preparing People for Work, Business, and Life

What exactly is The Stand DE?"

It's a question I've been getting a lot lately. The simple answer is that The Stand DE is a workforce development organization and social enterprise committed to developing people, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities through leadership development, entrepreneurship, workforce readiness, and real-world learning experiences. Our work is rooted in a simple belief: People thrive when they have access to opportunity, support, meaningful experiences, and environments that challenge them to grow. We do this through workforce development programs, leadership experiences, entrepreneurship exposure, training, coaching, community partnerships, and hands-on learning opportunities designed to prepare people for success in work, business, and life.

While The Stand DE serves people in many ways, one of our primary initiatives is the Hospitality & Leadership Lab.

The Stand De: Hospitality & Leadership Lab

The Hospitality & Leadership Lab is our signature workforce readiness, leadership development, and entrepreneurship program for young people ages 14–24. The program combines hospitality, business operations, leadership development, and hands-on work experiences to help participants build skills that can serve them throughout their lives and careers.

The program is built around one simple belief: People learn best by doing.

Learn

Participants receive training in:

  • Customer Service

  • Communication

  • Hospitality

  • Leadership

  • Professionalism

  • Food Safety

  • Business Operations

  • Teamwork

Practice

Participants strengthen those skills through:

  • Role-Playing Exercises

  • Team Meetings

  • Leadership Activities

  • Coaching and Feedback

  • Reflection and Personal Development

Apply

Participants then put those skills into practice through real-world experiences.

They work with customers.

They take orders.

They solve problems.

They support events.

They contribute to a functioning business operation.

They experience firsthand what it takes to work as part of a team and serve a community.

Every shift becomes a learning opportunity.

Every event becomes a leadership opportunity.

Why Hospitality?

Because hospitality creates opportunities to develop skills that transfer into every career path.

Communication.

Leadership.

Problem-Solving.

Professionalism.

Teamwork.

Adaptability.

Customer Service.

Hospitality places participants in real situations where they must think critically, work together, serve others, and take responsibility. It provides immediate feedback and real-world experiences that simply can't be replicated in a classroom alone. That's why hospitality serves as one of our primary teaching tools.

Food is the vehicle. People are the mission.

Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Leadership

At The Stand DE, we understand that success looks different for everyone.

Some participants will pursue employment. Some will continue their education.

Some will start businesses. Some will become leaders within their communities.

Our goal is not to prepare people for one path. Our goal is to prepare them for many possibilities.

Through the Hospitality & Leadership Lab, participants gain exposure to both the employee and employer perspectives. They learn what it means to show up on time, communicate professionally, work as part of a team, and deliver excellent service. They also gain insight into entrepreneurship, marketing, operations, leadership, customer experience, problem-solving, and what it takes to build and sustain a business.

We don't just teach people how to work in a business. We teach them how businesses work.

We don't just prepare them to earn opportunities. We help them learn how to create them.

Why We Exist

Throughout my career in human services, workforce development, youth development, customer service, and entrepreneurship, I've learned something important:

A job is important. But a job alone is not enough. People need opportunities to build confidence.

They need opportunities to develop leadership skills. They need mentorship. They need exposure.

They need real-world experiences that help them see what's possible for their future.

I've worked with young people and adults who had the talent but lacked the opportunity.

I've seen individuals with technical skills struggle because no one taught them communication, professionalism, leadership, or how to navigate workplace environments.

I've also seen what happens when people are given the right support, experiences, and opportunities to grow. Confidence increases. Possibilities expand. Leaders emerge. That's why The Stand DE exists. We believe people deserve opportunities to learn, lead, build, and become the best version of themselves.

What Makes Us Different?

Many workforce development programs focus primarily on employment outcomes.

At The Stand DE, we focus on people development. We prepare people for employment, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Our responsibility is not to decide which path someone should take.

Our responsibility is to help them develop the skills, confidence, and experiences needed to succeed on whichever path they choose. That's why our approach goes beyond job training.

At The Stand DE, we intentionally develop:

  • Communication Skills

  • Leadership Skills

  • Professionalism

  • Customer Service Excellence

  • Accountability

  • Teamwork

  • Problem Solving

  • Adaptability

  • Entrepreneurial Thinking

  • Confidence

Participants don't just learn how to follow directions. They learn how to lead.

They don't just learn how to complete tasks. They learn how to take ownership.

They don't just learn how to work. They learn how to grow.

Because our goal isn't simply to help people get jobs. Our goal is to help them build futures.

Why This Work Matters

The skills that create long-term success are often the ones that receive the least attention.

These skills influence how people show up in school, at work, in business, and within their communities. When people develop these skills, they carry them for a lifetime.

That's why this work matters. Not because we're teaching people how to sell food.

Because we're helping people develop skills that can impact every area of their future.

Why Invest?

Creating meaningful workforce development experiences requires more than good intentions.

It requires resources.

Training.

Mentorship.

Equipment.

Paid work experiences.

Community partnerships.

People who believe in developing people.

When you invest in The Stand DE, you're not simply supporting a program.

You're investing in future employees. You're investing in future entrepreneurs. You're investing in future leaders. You're investing in stronger communities. Most importantly, you're investing in people.

Looking Ahead

The truth is, The Stand DE has always been about people. For years, people saw the hot dogs. I saw the conversations. The confidence being built. The leadership emerging. The young person who finally spoke up. The team member who learned how to take ownership. The future entrepreneur who realized they could build something of their own. The community member who discovered they were capable of more. Those moments are why this work matters.

The Hospitality & Leadership Lab isn't just about preparing participants for their next opportunity.

It's about helping people recognize their potential. It's about giving them the tools, experiences, and support needed to build a future they can be proud of.

As we continue to grow, our vision remains simple:

More opportunities. More leaders. More entrepreneurs. More pathways to success. More people realizing what's possible for their lives. Because everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, lead, and thrive.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about The Stand DE and the work we're building.

Whether you're a participant, parent, partner, employer, sponsor, supporter, or community member, we invite you to join us on this journey.

Food is the vehicle. People are the mission. And we're just getting started.
